FBI Agents on a Losing Streak

Feb 14, 2007
Everyone knows that FBI is probably the first line of defense against external attacks. But probably not many knew that those people are also people, and sometimes they are a bit more clumsy than other people: they can lose thing, for example.

The term "things" mentioned above will denote in following context weapons and laptops (in some cases with classified information).

So where does this information come from? The Office of the Inspector General (OIG), which is part of the Department of Justice had run some researches, concerning the vanishing "things". The first survey of this type was undertaken back in 2001, when OIG was looking into the problem of weapons and laptops loss.

This audit ended in 2002 and the results were a bit disturbing, whereas the second audit proved some changes and the losses decreased.

Losses of FBI goods, according to two audits by OIG (pieces per month)

Results of the first auditResults of the second audit
Functional weapons3.82 1.09
Training weapons5.07 0.41
Laptops10.71 2.64

Despite the fact that the losses decreased, the OIG still raises questions on what sanctions FBI undertakes in order to sink these indexes to zero. A loss of a laptop, belonging to the Federal Bureau of Investigation is not a small problem, because such a gadget can contain either secret information on FBI operations or special software.

The total results of the two audits are the following: after the second 44 month audit the FBI agents have lost 160 laptops and 160 weapons (somehow suspicious - it makes one think of some conspiracy). The first 28 month audit has revealed 354 weapons and 317 laptops lost. Thus the improvement here is seen
